Unlike book 1, this book has not been divided into chapters. Not to say that series like Eye, Booth, Fire, and Smile Trek don’t exist, but they are generally much shorter in length. For example, in book 1, the series “Eye” had 15 cartoons in it, and “Smile Trek” had 20. In book 2, the series range from 2 to a maximum of 7 only. Dividing book 2 into chapters would have resulted in at least 21 chapters (versus only 8 for book 1). You will note that book 2 does not have as much subtlety as most the jokes are quite obvious.
.Coldcall – Note that the puddles on the ground get slightly bigger as the ice melts (frames 5 and 6).
.Loaded – You can see Ansada’s surprise in frame 4, as I don’t think even he expects the phone to fire like a gun. I like the fact that in cartoons, people can get shot, but not really harmed. Just annoyed.
.Help – No comment.
.Hijack – No comment.
.Formee – Note Jack’s expression in frame 9 as he seems happy when he thinks someone is calling for him.
.Gramma – Jack gets a fright when Gramma pops her head in. This is the first time we see any of Ansada’s relatives.
.Telly – This time both Ansada and Jack get a fright when Telly pops his head in. Although Gramma and Telly don’t actually form a series, I placed them together because their punch lines match.
.Hugh1 – Imagine how high Ansada jumps. It takes him a while to fall back on the ground.
.Hugh2 – No comment.
.Poultry – No comment.
.Moustache – I kind of borrowed the “poit” sound effect from an old Don Martin cartoon in Mad Magazine. The way Jack has been drawn in frames 5 and 6 makes me chuckle.
.Band – No comment.
.Stevie – The images from this cartoon make up the images on the home page of the website.
.Postman – No comment.
.Dang – I like the way Jack is frightened by the loud noise in frame 2, and a little aghast in frame 3. Watching only Ansada in frames 3, 4, 5 (where he has an “uh-oh” moment) and 6 make me chuckle.
.Distance – In the 7th frame, Ansada thinks his idea to distance himself from the phone may actually work, and therefore smiles slightly.
.Frost – Note in frames 5 and 6 that Jack’s arms have alternated.
.Rabbit – Similarly, in frames 5 and 6 Jack chews on both sides of his mouth. Also, the punch lines for Frost and Rabbit match, which is why I placed them together.
.Pharmacy – No comment.
.Flat – Note Ansada’s naughty expression in frame 5 as he knows exactly how to respond to what was just said.
.Sikh1 – I like the way the man talks calmly at first and then shouts (frames 4 and 5). The man also bends down to meet Jack face to face. It’s funnier when Jack does the same thing (frames 6 and 7) and has to jump up to meet the man face to face.
.Sikh2 – No comment.
.Sikh3 – No comment.
.April – Watching Jack transition from frame 1 to 2 makes me chuckle because it is so random and unexpected. I also love the pause in frame 8.
.Chordless – No comment.
.Bone1 – No comment.
.Bone2 – Back in my day when I was growing up, we had to call the operator to book a long distance call. Depending on where you were placing the call for, it could also be referred to as an overseas phone call. It’s not something most people in my child’s generation have ever had to experience.
.Bone3 – The “Skeleton” character appears as one of the 3 enemies in the Ansada Fone game.
.Bone4 – I thought it was cute that Jack jumps into Ansada’s arms, and then hides behind him.
.Bone5 – Jack overcomes his fear of Doug and stands normally.
.Bone6 – I actually have never seen the movie “This is Spinal Tap”, but have heard a lot about it.
.Bone7 – No comment.
.Fax1 – This joke was partly inspired by my nephew. I had to shade Ansada in frame 3 to depict the shadow of the box about to fall on him.
.Fax2 – This joke was also partly inspired by my nephew.
.Fax3 – In frame 3, one can see the paper starting to come out of the fax machine.
.Fax4 – No comment.
.Tables – No comment.
.Krank – No comment.
.Shower – This joke was partly inspired by my daughter. Except for his head, Ansada’s body remains the same from frames 2 to 6.
.Priest1 – This joke was partly inspired by the Dick Emery Show. There was a sketch where an elderly couple are going through customs, and the wife is nagging the husband to death. When the customs officer asks the man if he has anything to declare, he says “Yes. I hate my wife!”
.Priest2 – This is one of my personal favorites from this book. Makes me laugh every time.
.Priest3 – Note how the telephone starts to eerily float in frame 2.
.Priest4 – An old joke, but classic none the less.
.Priest5 – It was tough depicting Swiss cheese in this cartoon as I did not have enough space.
.Priest6 – No comment.
.Weird – Ansada suddenly (and quite randomly) starts to act very strange which terrifies Jack. Is it any wonder? The two of them just witnessed an attempted exorcism in the previous cartoons.
.Bathroom – When you desperately need to use the bathroom, would you do what Ansada does in frames 2, 3, 4 and 5?
.Alone1 – No comment.
.Alone2 – This is the one and only time that Ansada does not appear in a cartoon at all. Note how the telephone starts to grow from frame 2 onwards.
.Scare1 – No comment.
.Scare2 – A successful collaboration between Ansada and Jack results in the first time the telephone gets frightened.
.Fright1 – No comment.
.Fright2 – No comment.
.Nose1 – I thought showing expressions on a giant eyeball was hard. I had even less to work with while dealing with a giant nose. All I could really do was to alter the size of his nostril to show any expression.
.Nose2 – In this cartoon, references are made to nosey parker, nose drops, and sticking your nose into other people’s business.
.Nose3 – Every frame has a nose reference.
.Nose4 – Note that Jack has bits of snot on him. Ew.
.Nose5 – How to draw a giant nose sneezing out a telephone required some thought.
.Nose6 – No comment.
.Yoga – One day, my daughter pulled me aside and acted out this joke. I thought it was adorable.
.Shaaday – Growing up in Zurich way back in the days before the internet, I remember that if we wanted to know the exact time, we would have to either dial the operator or dial 161. The time was actually 4.35pm when I was drawing that cartoon.
.Revolution – No comment.
.Game1 – I like these moments when Ansada talks to the reader (frame 4). Poor Jack has literally nothing to hide behind.
.Game2 – No comment.
.Conspiracy – No comment.
.Itch – If you had an itch, would you do what Ansada does in this cartoon?
.Mad – Ansada finally snaps and lashes out.
.Ear1 – I had a tough time dealing with expressions for the giant eyeball and the giant nose. The giant ear got me beat. I had absolutely nothing to work with. Note that whenever the giant ear talks, he says it softly.
.Ear2 – No comment.
.Ear3 – No comment.
.Ear4 – No comment.
.Ear5 – No comment.
.Moron – Ansada obviously knows what is it up in the sky (frame 3).
.Bubble1 – No comment.
.Bubble2 – Was it the pop of the bubble that frightens the phone?
.Bubble3 – No. It’s bubblegum itself that frightens the phone.
.Bubble4 – When the phone threatens to ring, Ansada threatens to say the word “bubble gum”. The phone succumbs to the fear and very softly and politely says “ring”. This is why collecting the bubble gum in the Maze game of the Ansada Fone app allows Ansada to collect a phone even if it is ringing.
.Hoodahell – It’s the pause in frame 7 that makes the punch line funny.
.Cop1 – No wonder Ansada and Jack are so jittery. No one knows when a character will suddenly appear out of nowhere and yell at them.
.Cop2 – No comment.
.Cop3 – No comment.
.Cop4 – No comment.
.Cop5 – No comment.
.Dreams – Frame 3 has to be read very slowly. Ironically, Jack’s eyes are open throughout the cartoon even though he’s actually asleep (and in a dream).
.Monster – No comment.
.Butcher1 – Very early on in my career, I always had the impression that a meeting consisted of staff assembled in a meeting room mostly listening to their boss talk. This concept of mine was challenged later when a customer had dropped in to see me, received a call and told the caller that he was in a meeting. At the time, I incorrectly thought the customer was being disingenuous to the caller.
.Butcher2 – This joke was inspired by an old Benny Hill sketch. Benny Hill is acting like a Chinese man who turns to the other man and says something like “And the miritaly men assembled in a big blaun house…” to which the man says “Barracks?” to which Benny Hill says “It’s true!!”
.Butcher3 – This is a nod to the nursery rhyme “Mary had a little lamb”.
.Butcher4 – No comment.
.Butcher5 – No comment.
.Butcher6 – No comment.
.Butcher7 – The punch line has a double meaning. Cut could be associated with meat as well as a director wanting to stop filming a scene.
.Dexter – I was a big fan of Dexter’s Lab when it first started. I loved Christine Cavanaugh’s voice as Dexter, and I also loved the sound effects when a character would shake something (frame 4).
.Pianist1 – My brother in law laughed for 5 minutes when he read this. I was a little wary of putting this series in the book because of the innuendos, but then thought…what the hell; let’s allow the adults a little chuckle too.
.Pianist2 – No comment.
.Pianist3 – No comment.
.Grudge – This horror movie gave me the creeps, and I’m not easily creeped out. It was that weird “oooaaah” sound that gave me chills. My wife would start making that sound sometimes at night just to freak me out. What a sweetheart.
.Tex1 – It was inevitable that somewhere down the line I would make fun of the dreaded taxes (in their various forms) people are forced to pay.
.Tex2 – No comment.
.Tex3 – No comment.
.Tex4 – Note that in frames 6 and 7, Tex’s body is exactly the same except for the arm with the gun.
.Attack – Note the silly sound effects as it goes from woop, to whip, to cream! (Whipped cream).
.Hats – It was quick thinking on Jack’s part to duck in frame 3.
.Giddyup – It was time I brought in some Zain-iness (zaniness) to the cartoon. Jack climbing up on Ansada and riding him like horse fit that bill.
.Genes – No comment.
.Wray1 – I’m not a good caricature artist, so I had to trace the likeness of Ray Charles from another cartoon. Note in frame 3 how Jack is a little star struck. Ansada has no clue who this person is.
.Wray2 – No comment.
.Wray3 – No comment.
.Clown – A nod to my musical hero, Gerry Rafferty.
.Sleep1 – No comment.
.Sleep2 – It was a challenge to draw Ansada smacking his lips after a yawn (frame 3). How dumb can Ansada get? How did he not expect the phone to retaliate if he decided to use it as a pillow? I guess he was tired and not thinking straight.
.Sleep3 – This actually happened to me in real life. My wife. She’s silly.
.Doc1 – Not only does the absurdity of Jack’s ailments make me laugh, but the smirk on Jack’s face (frame 7) and the double meaning of the punch line.
.Doc2 – No comment.
.Doc3 – I like the way the witch doctor’s qualifications have absolutely nothing to do with medicine.
.Doc4 – An old joke, but with a funny twist in that Jack’s moves are so whacky (and none of them require the use of his elbow that’s hurting).
.Doc5 – No comment.
.Doc6 – I like the way the voodoo doll actually affects Jack (frame 4).
.Mobile1 – Yes, kids. When mobile phones were first introduced, some of them actually had antennas.
.Mobile2 – No comment.
.Mobile3 – I like the transition in frames 7, 8 and 9.
.Mobile4 – No comment.
.Mobile5 – Do you refer to these as mobile phones, or cell phones?
.Mobile6 – W.A.P (a web browser for mobile phones) lasted until the 2010s, but then was superseded by modern standards. This joke was inspired by my cousin.
.Mobile7 – The last frame of book 2 has the word “ring” as the final word. I thought it was a good way to end the book.
